Kyle Hatcher is a former U.S. diplomat whose career took him directly into the darker side of international affairs. As a political officer at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, he worked with human-rights, religious-freedom and civil-society groups—work that made him a target of an extraordinary Russian intelligence operation. The U.S. government said the FSB, successor to the KGB, subjected Kyle to intense surveillance and attempted to discredit him with a fabricated smear campaign. The U.S. ambassador formally protested, stood behind Kyle, and he continued his work. Before Moscow, Kyle served as a U.S. Treasury intelligence analyst focused on terrorist financing and as a Peace Corps volunteer in Kazakhstan. He is a Nashville native and Montgomery Bell Academy graduate. Some people read spy stories. Kyle Hatcher lived one.
